MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

For the first time in 50 years since its classification as a nongame species with no protections, our Texas mountain lion has a realistic chance for a better life. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission will vote in May on two proposed regulations, a ban on canned hunting and 36-hour trap check times. See below for specifics.

Proposed Regulations

  • Ban on canned hunting. A canned hunt occurs when a mountain lion is captured, then released to be hunted. Those who abide by “fair chase” hunting that provides an animal the opportunity to escape don’t condone this type of hunting.
  • 36-hour trap check times. This proposed regulation would make it illegal for a mountain lion to be left in a trap until it succumbs to exposure or dehydration.  While this ban would end the cat’s suffering sooner, it would not prevent landowners from trapping for predation management.
Regular trap checks will also reduce the number of deaths of non-target species, like our threatened black bear.

On behalf of our mountain lions, thank you.
