Texas Makes History for Mountain Lions

New Regulations

1.   Ban on canned hunting. A canned hunt occurs when a mountain lion is captured, then released to be hunted.

2.   36-hourtrap check times. This regulation requires that live mountain lions not be held in traps or snares for more than 36 hours.

Texas now stands with all 16 states that have breeding mountain lions in having some regulations of the hunting and trapping of the species.

What's Next?

As a potential step in managing the state's mountain lion population, the Commission also asked that TPWD prepare materials on mandatory harvest (mortality) reporting. This information will help to provide valuable data on the cats, yet another significant step.

Texas Native Cats appreciates the public comments you sent to TPWD. Truly, this outcome would not have occurred without you.
